Coca-Cola has awarded a five-year R5.6bn ($637.15m) contract to South Africa-based beverage can manufacturer Nampac Bevcan to produce and supply lightweight aluminium cans for its portfolio of beverages.
Coca-Cola South Africa's subsidiary Coca-Cola Canners of Southern Africa will distribute its beverage range in Nampac Bevcan cans in Gauteng market in 2013 and remaining parts of the country in 2014.
Bevcan managing director Erik Smuts said: "Our infrastructure investment for this project includes the installation of a new high-speed line at one of our Gauteng plants, which is due for commissioning in May 2013."
Coca-Cola Southern Africa president Therese Gearhart said that to transport the lightweight aluminium cans less fuel and energy are required.
"The new aluminium can is in line with best global practice and trends in packaging. It is also light and easy-to-carry and will appeal to today's environmentally-conscious consumer," Gearhart added.
Bevcan will also replace its production line of tin-plated steel beverage cans with aluminum-bodied cans in line with global trends.
The company is set introduce these aluminum cans in mid-2013.
