The Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) program is seeking public comment on a new amendment to the program which includes new mussel farm standards.
The BAP program offers certification worldwide to seafood farmers who meet certain standards set by the program. Now, the program is adding mussel farm standards, addressing social and environmental responsibility, food safety, animal welfare and traceability. The standards address all forms of mussel farming, including seabed, pole and line or raft-and-rack culturing.
“The addition of BAP mussel farm standards represents an important advancement for the BAP program, as it expands the number of species covered by the third-party certification program,” the BAP said in a release. “The mussel farm standards will be used as a template for broader mollusk farm standards that cover other commercially important species, including clams, oysters, scallops and abalone.”
The deadline to submit comments is 8 June 2013.
