Nomacorc, a producer of alternative wine closures, is to introduce a new zero carbon footprint wine closure, Select Bio, which is made with plant-based materials.

The Select Bio closures, which are made using renewable plant-based polymers extracted from sugar cane, will be 100% recyclable.

The new closures will go in-line with the Nomacorc's Select Series portfolio that is known for managing oxygen levels in the bottle. Just like the Select Series products, Select Bio will prevent the wine from oxidation and reduction, while also improving post-bottle aging and bottle-to-bottle consistency.

The Select Bio Series will include three products, each with different oxygen ingress levels. These products will resemble the Select Series products in look and feel with serrated ends, chamfered edges, custom side printing and optional custom end-printing.

Suitable for organic and biodynamic wines, the carbon neutral closures will allow wineries to deliver wines in the same taste as intended.

Nomacorc president and CEO Lars von Kantzow said, "Not only are we able to serve wineries seeking a more reliable and sustainable packaging solution, but we can reduce our overall corporate carbon footprint while taking an important first step towards our goal of minimizing the use of fossil-based energy and materials across our entire range of products."

Select Bio closures are currently being showcased at the Intervitis Interfructa trade show held in the Stuttgart Messe in Germany from 24-27 April 2013.

Nomacorc will initially offer the Select Bio Series for bottling trials to its select customers, before rolling out commercially for the 2014 bottling season.
