UK soft drinks industry overall retail value up 3.3%

Overall volumes, however, declined by 2.5% to 14.2 billion liters or 227 liters per person due to tough economic climate and poor weather.

Sector wise the 2013 UK Soft Drinks Report showed that bottled water and energy drinks volumes were up, while carbonates, dilutables and fruit juice volumes were down.

Sugary drinks accounted for 39% of the soft drinks market, while the drinks with no added sugar accounted 61%. It was also observed that 99% of the households have consumed soft drinks.

Ignoring the fact that soft drinks consumption is the cause of obesity, overweight and obese consumers have chosen sugary drinks than non-sugar drinks compared to average weight consumers.

Overweight and obese consumers, however, are less likely than average to consume soft drinks.

BSDA director general Gavin Partington said that even in the tough economic conditions, the soft drinks industry has done well.

"Keeping in touch with people's tastes is central to the industry's success, as the prominent role of drinks without added sugar shows," Partington added.
