Record month for Norway salmon exports

Core Tip: The value of Norwegian seafood exports in August totaled NOK 4.7 billion (USD 781 million, EUR 589 million) up 20 percent compared to the same month last year according to data from the Norwegian Seafood Council.
For the year,Norwegian fjord trout value of the country’s seafood exports is at NOK 36.1 billion (USD 6 billion, EUR 4.5 billion), an 11 percent increase.

Salmon exports contributed the highest amount to the total value for August with NOK 3.3 billion (USD 549 million million, EUR 413 million) up 31 percent. To date, the value of Norwegian salmon exports is at NOK 24 billion (USD 4 billion, EUR 3 billion), an increase of 28 percent. In August, the average price for fresh whole Norwegian salmon was NOK 41.45 (USD 6.89, EUR 5.19), up from NOK 28.35 (USD 4.71, EUR 3.55) in August 2012. France, Poland and Russia were the biggest importers of Norwegian salmon.

“The growth in the value of exports is due to increased prices for Norwegian salmon resulting from continued strong growth in demand combined with reduced volume of salmon from Norway,” said Paul Aandahl, Norwegian Seafood Council manager, salmon and trout.

Exports of Norwegian fjord trout in August increased to NOK 214 million (USD 35.6 million, EUR 26.8 million), up 31 percent. For the year to date, the value of exports of Norwegian fjord trout is at NOK 1.4 billion (USD 233 million, EUR 175 million), an increase of NOK 330 million (USD 54.8 million, EUR 41 million) compared to the same period in 2012. The biggest importers of Norwegian fjord trout are Russia and Belarus.

Value of Norwegian herring exports fell to NOK 155 million (USD 26 million, EUR 19.4 million), down by 18 percent from the same month last year. For the year, the value of herring exports is at NOK 1.6 billion (USD 266 million, EUR 201 million), down by 40 percent. The biggest markets for Norwegian herring are Russia and Germany.

Exports of mackerel in August were down to NOK 41.5 million (USD 6.9 million, EUR 5.2 million), a decrease in value of NOK 21 million (USD 3.5 million, EUR 2.6 million). For the year, the value of mackerel exports are down to NOK 763 million (USD 127 million, EUR 95.6 million). The most important markets for mackerel export are Russia and China.

Clipfish exports fell in value in August to NOK 278 million (USD 46.2 million, EUR 34.9 million). A breakdown of this figure shows that Norwegian cod clipfish accounted for NOK 154 million (USD 25.6 million, EUR 19.3 million) and Norwegian saithe clipfish NOK 99 million (USD 16.5 million, EUR 12.4 million), with the remainder accounted for by ling, torsk and other groundfish. The biggest market for Norwegian cod clipfish is Portugal, while Brazil is the biggest market for Norwegian saithe clipfish.

In August, exports of fresh Norwegian cod, including fillets, increased in value to NOK 45 million (USD 7.5 million, EUR 5.6 million). In the same month, exports of frozen Norwegian cod, including fillets, were up to NOK 112 million (USD 18.6 million, EUR 14 million).
