The Sussex County Board of Adjustment recently approved plans from Allen Harim Foods to convert a former pickle plant in Millsboro into a poultry processing facility. The company plans to begin operations at the facility in late 2015 or early 2016.

According to the company’s website, Allen Harim plans to process what it calls a “ginseng bird”, a smaller bird named for the stew in which chicken is an ingredient. It is much smaller than traditional broilers, weighing in at just 2 lbs. Allen Harim intends to process the ginseng birds to meet the demands of a growing Korean population in the United States.

Seaford, Del.-based Allen Harim also is planning to upgrade the former pickle plant with new floor drains, refrigeration systems, processing equipment and a wastewater treatment system.
