Good movement at good prices should be bringing positive conditions in the USA market for Pink Lady® growers in the Southern Hemisphere harvesting fruit to soon be joining domestic supplies.
According to contacts in the industry by Pink Lady America LLC (PLA) in Yakima, Washington, shipments by Pink Lady marketers are up substantially over the 2012-13 season which is made even more significant because of the size of the crop going to market.
In terms of volume this means weekly shipments averaging well over 100,000 cartons (40 pounds each or 18 kg each) with the overall percentage of the crop shipped being up substantially over last season. Total shipments are now over 2.5 million cartons.
Pink Lady® Brand apples are bringing some of the highest prices in the apple category. This has resulted in increased plantings of selections that are available to utilize the brand.
“It’s always pleasing to be involved in a good year in the Pink Lady® Brand Apple industry because it means the growers are being rewarded for all of their hard work,” says Dr. John Reeves, PLA general manager. “It’s even better that those growers have been able to have a number of successful years which is also good for consumers seeking out this apple at their favorite supermarket.”
