Nestle to recall Maggi noodles in India

Core Tip: The Indian government has ordered Nestle to recall around 200,000 packs of Maggi noodles in the country as it contains unsafe levels of lead.
This comes after Food safety and Drug Administration (FDA) in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh found that the noodles contained traces of lead at seven-times the safe level for consumption.

The authorities have found monosodium glutamate (MSG) in a sample of Maggi noodles and are continuing with their probe.

However, Nestle contends that the FDA has investigated Maggi samples which reached the 'best-before' date in November 2014 and are not available in the market anymore.

The company is now challenging the authorities by filing the requisite representations.

Nestle claims to meet food safety and quality controls at its Maggi factories, including thorough quality checks at each stage of raw material sourcing and manufacturing process.

The company also said that Maggi Noodles comply with all applicable food safety laws.

Nestle has submitted product samples to an independent accredited laboratory and will provide the results to local authorities.

The company stated that it does not add MSG to Maggi Noodles sold in India and believes that the authorities may have detected glutamate, which occurs naturally in many foods.
