During the summer, the US mainly depends on imports for its orange and mandarin supplies. South Africa, Chile, Peru and Uruguay are important suppliers. However, domestically grown Valencia oranges are available between April and October.

“So far, it’s a pretty steady Valencia season for us with adequate volume,” says Randy Jacobson with Cecelia Packing Corporation. “For some sizes there is a shortage, but in general, it is a fairly normal season.” Business was slow in June and July, as it typically is, due to the summer fruit season. “We are seeing an uptake in August,” said Jacobson. “Schools have started again and oranges are an important fruit item for school lunch programs.”

When the Valencia season winds down in October, Cecelia Packing moves into its Navel season which lasts through May. Additionally, the company offers Minneolas, blood oranges and late-season mandarins.
