The good weather conditions in southern Norway have helped speed up the ripening of strawberries. In some places, Norwegian strawberries may have already become available in stores. If the weather conditions don't change, we should see greater volumes about mid-June and everyone may be able to consume Norwegian berries by Midsummer.
Berries are becoming increasingly popular and strawberries are the favourite. In total, Norwegians consumed an average of 3.26 kilos of strawberries in 2015, with a share of this being imported. (Figures from the Health report, OFG)
Strawberries are appreciated all year round, but Norwegian strawberries are considered something special when they hit the country's stores. The most popular strawberry variety in Norway is the Corona, and the Sonata is also gaining popularity, as it is large, with an attractive appearance and a good shelf life.
Norwegian strawberry producers are working to extend the Norwegian season by, for instance, setting up plastic tunnels over the berries. In this way, they aim for Norwegian strawberries to become available a little earlier and later.
