River prawn (macrobranchium nipponense ) enjoys high protein and nutrition. Mr. Lu, a citizen from Nanjing, recently went to market to buy some river shrimp, but he found that the price had been up to 100 yuan/500g. “I have ever bought the river shrimp in June and the price was only 50 yuan/500g at that time,” he said. Foodspath obtains information from the market that summer is the traditional peak season for fish and shrimp. And because of the previous frequent rainstorms, the production goes low. As a result, the price continues to go up.
In the market in Nanjing, the cheapest river shrimp is sold at 80 yuan/500g. Most of the aquatic product store sold the shrimp at 100 yuan/500g, some even at as high as 120 yuan/500g.
In Shanghai, the price also goes at high level, which was at about 80 yuan/500g in April. Later, the price decreased slightly with the river shrimp market volume going up. In May and June, the general price was at 50-70 yuan/500g. But, surprisingly, the price suddenly rised up rather than drop after late July, and surpassed the record high price in last few years.
In the seafood market in Shanghai, the cheapest price of river shrimp was at 78 yuan/500g, while most of the price was at 80-100 yuan/500g. Same as that in Nanjing, the highest price reached around 120 yuan/500g.
The important river prawn farmers in Shanghai are locate in Qingpu district. Many farmers stated that farming area decreased a lot because of the policy of returning farmland to forest. On the other hand, the river shrimp farmers also became less than this year. As a result, the shrimp supply went intense this summer, which maybe the direct reason that caused the river shrimp price up.
