Green onion supplies winding down, supplies still good

Core Tip: Our green onion supplies are good this time of the year.
“Our green onion supplies are good this time of the year. Growers in Oregon, Washington, Michigan, Ohio and Canada are competing with us,” says Don Hobson of Bos-kovich Farms in California.

“The weather has been hot, but good. All of this affects our supplies of green onions coming in from Mexico. We’re not feeling anything affect the onions we get coming in from Mexico; we have enough people harvesting our onions, which helps us out,” shared Hobson. Boskovich Farms receives its green onions from farms located on the coastal side of Mexico.

“The market is depressed for probably the next ten days, with our available supply dropping. The growing days are getting shorter, but we’ll see our supplies beginning to pick up again in September,” said Hobson. “Our customers come from all over the U.S. and Canada. About the only thing that would negatively affect our green onion supply would be something that happens with the weather.”

“Right now, our main challenge is that we’re seeing less demand, which is due to all the local product that’s available,” Hobson said. “Soon, they’ll stop growing and we’ll see our demand beginning to go back up.”
