"The main production regions of Chinese garlic are located in Shandong, Hebei and Henan. Last year the high market price of garlic made growers nationwide expand their surfaces for cultivation. In Shandong province alone, the cultivation surface increased by 30%," says Mr; Sun Guangbao, a cultivator of garlic.
"The collective sales period of the garlic from Shandong province starts at the end of April and lasts until around 10 May. The large expansion of the cultivation surface has directly caused a market supply increase this year. As a result, the market price has dropped. Compared to the 4 RMB for garlic shoots as a buying price the same period last year, the price this year has already dropped from 2.6 RMB to no more than 1 RMB per kg. All together, the price has fallen by 75% compared to the same time last year."
"My garlic cultivation base is located in Dongchangfu district in Liaocheng city, Shandong province. The total cultivation surface for garlic, onions and greenhouse cultivated melons is about 13,000 hectares. The current sales situation of the garlic shoots is not reasonable at all. The market price is unreasonably low. In order to protect the growth of garlic from these influences, many farmers are forced to hasten the harvest of the garlic shoots, if they don't want to sell it at an even lower price, or just throw it away. We are now actively looking for cooperation with buyers all over China in the hope that we can reduce the financial harm to the minimum."
