The Pictsweet Company is recalling 1,872 cases of Pictsweet Farms Steam’ables Asparagus Spears because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. No reports of illness have been received to date in connection with this recall.

The recalled item is Pictsweet Farms 8 ounce Steam’ables Asparagus Spears. The product has the UPC number 0 70560 97799 9 and has production codes that start with these six digits: 2138XD. The best by date on the package is “BEST BY AUG 1, 2020.” The asparagus was sold in these states: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
The recall was issued after the manufacturer told the company the products suspected of Listeria monocytogenes contamination was “inadvertently shipped to the Pictsweet Company.”

If you bought this item don’t eat it even if you are going to cook it first. Take it back to the place of purchase, or throw it away after first wrapping it in plastic wrap or foil.

You should then clean out your refrigerator or freezer with a mild bleach solution so any remaining bacteria will be destroyed. Use a solution of 1 gallon of warm water and add 1 tablespoon liquid chlorine bleach. Wipe down the appliance and all packaged items, then wipe them with a cloth soaked in clean water.

If you ate this product, you should watch yourself for the symptoms of listeriosis for the next 70 days. Those symptoms include fever, stiff neck, severe headache, diarrhea, and muscle aches.
