The asparagus is an option for the valley
Luis Borquez, a representative and producer of asparagus of the Local Agricultural Association of Producers of Vegetables of the Yaqui and Mayo Valley, said asparagus had become a viable option for crop diversification, and that it allowed producers to take advantage of saline soils, which otherwise wouldn't be used in agricultural activities.
He said that, even though the asparagus was not very well known and consumed in Mexico, it was a viable option in the Valley as 90 percent of the domestic production is exported to the United States.
Regular market
Currently, the market for this vegetable is regular, as the supply and demand of the product plays a very important role for producers. Prices can suddenly rise or fall seriously benefiting or affecting the producers' economy, Borquez said.
Great demand in November
According to the producer, Thursday, November 22 will be a day of hard work for producers due to the high demand there will be in the United States due to the high consumption of food there is on the weekend of Thanksgiving.
Mexico is the third biggest producer of asparagus
