Last year, the province of Albacete's garlic sector broke several records, with increases in the acreage, the number of hectares insured and the damages reported.
A total of 8,006 hectares were insured and damages were reported on 5,818, namely due to the impact of hailstorms and heavy rains in the second half of May, and especially to the storm of the evening of June 2, which took a toll in the municipalities of Albacete, Barrax, La Gineta, Minaya and La Roda.
As a result of this storm, more than € 18 million have been paid out in compensations. This figure is greater than the sum of all compensations for all crops in 2017 in the province, despite the drought. It is also more than half of all compensations paid out to the country's garlic sector in 2018.
Despite last year's huge losses, this season's insurance premiums have not gone up. The subsidies granted by the Ministry of Agriculture through ENESA have also been kept.
