Swiss supplier of carton packaging and filling machines SIG Combibloc plans to invest €36m at its South American packaging plant near Curitiba in Brazil’s Paraná state to install an extrusion line that will allow it to laminate unprocessed cardboard for the aseptic carton packs.
The latest investment will be used for the second phase of construction.
The project in Paraná has been planned in several expansion stages. On completing the first project phase, the plant was put into operation in mid-2011 and by the end of 2012, SIG Combibloc South America has recorded growth of more than 60% compared to earlier.
After the installation of production line, the pre-laminated packaging material used to make the carton packs was printed, cut to size, stamped and sealed.
With the latest investment and the implementation of the second phase of construction, the new line will laminate the unprocessed cardboard for the carton packs on-site in Campo Largo with a polymer and aluminum coating.
The inner polymer layers develop a liquid barrier for the product, and the outer layer keeps away from moisture, while the thin aluminum layer protects the food packaged in the carton pack from light, oxygen and external odors.
SIG Combibloc is one of the leading system suppliers of carton packaging and filling machines for food and beverage industries. It has over 4,870 employees.
