The Dannon, a US-based subsidiary of Danone, has reformulated its Danimals Smoothies with improved nutrition profile for kids.
The new reformulated version of Danimals Smoothies comes with 25% less sugar content.
Rich in calcium and vitamin D, Danimals Smoothies help build strong bones and regulate muscle function, claims the company. They do not contain artificial colors, flavors or high fructose corn syrup.
The company's research and development team took two years to change the formulation to make the smoothies suitable for kids.
The Dannon research and development director Thierry Saint-Denis said that they have balanced the natural acidity of the drink with sugar.
"The more acidic a yogurt or smoothie is, the more sugar you need to add in order to make it taste better," Saint-Denis added.
"Through experimenting with different yogurt cultures, we were able to reduce the acidity and, in turn, reduce the need for sugar to mask the tartness."
The Dannon marketing senior vice president Sergio Fuster said: "We hear concerns from parents about the amount of sugar in their kids' diets, and we worked for a long time to find a way to improve the total nutritional value of Danimals Smoothies while still making them taste great, which is what made them our bestselling kids' product in the first place."
Danimals Smoothies are available at food stores in the dairy aisle across the US.
