The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) has established closed seasons and areas for shrimp fishing in marine and estuarine lagoon systems in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea.Shrimp fishing is one of the biggest and most important fisheries of the Gulf and Caribbean coast in Mexico.
The main coastal operating areas are located in the northern Gulf of Mexico (Tamaulipas and Veracruz), Campeche (Tabasco and Campeche) and the Mexican Caribbean (Quintana Roo, Contoy area).
The ban is designed to protect shrimp during breeding.
The agreement, published in the Official Journal of the Federation, specifies that from 00:00 hours on 1 May until 24:00 pm on 15 August 2013, from the US border in Tamaulipas to the mouth of the river Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, the fishing of shrimp will be banned.
The agreement states that the lifting of the ban for this area will be subject to the results of the investigations carried out INAPESCA.
