Vietnam's exports of fruit and vegetables jumped in the first half of this year, with China and Japan being the main destinations.
The exports totalled US$492 million (15.25 billion baht), or a 33.5% increase from the same period of last year, Vietnam News reported on Thursday, citing figures from the Vietnamese Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry.
China was the main customer, ordering fruits and vegetables worth $90 million, a 9.3% increase, but the outstanding market was Japan, which imported produce worth $55 million, a leap of 104%, it added.
The ministry expected more room to grow for Japanese consumers.
Other markets were South Korea, Thailand and the United States.
The exports to South Korea rose 84.5% to $13 million and Thailand imported worth $16 million, an 85% hike.
Nguyen Van Ky, general secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetables Association, said the most popular export fruit was dragon fruit, which accounted for 40% of the total export value.
The export of the fruit to the US jumped 1,200 tonnes last year from only 100 tonnes in 2008 after it was allowed to enter US markets.
Vietnam targeted 2,000 tonnes of exports of Dragon Fruit this year.
Other favourite fruits are rambutan, mango, lychee and longan.
