The Smurfit Kappa Group has developed a new packaging capable of transporting 8 kilos of bananas on a single surface. This corrugated cardboard tray has been designed with an innovative lower bracket which makes it possible to pile them up with the 17 kilo boxes currently being used by its customers, without the need to enlarge their surface.

In partnership with the company Bonnysa Agroalimentaria, Smurfit Kappa's subsidiary in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has developed this new packaging format, which is aimed at improving the presentation of the final product, while reducing handling times for large stores.

As a result, Smurfit Kappa has created an innovative corrugated cardboard tray with capacity for 8 kilos of bananas on a single surface, which has already been successfully implanted by some of the Group's clients. This new tray has been presented as an alternative to plastic boxes, reducing the environmental impact of the logistics chain.

Smurfit Kappa keeps focusing strongly on the fruit and vegetables market, researching and developing innovative, sustainable and high quality packaging solutions and turning cardboard packaging into the safest, most suitable for the horticultural industry.

In Spain, Smurfit Kappa owns six factories specialised in cardboard packaging for fruit and vegetables. The subsidiary Smurfit Kappa Iberoamericana, which has another factory in San Vicent del Raspeig (Alicante), made a total turnover of 79.11 million Euro in 2012 (+0.2%) with 199 employees. As a whole, the Smurfit Kappa Group made 662 million Euro last year in Spain (667 million in 2011), with a total of 1,980 employees.
