The Agrarian Association of Young Growers (Asaja) of Cordoba reported this Monday that the garlic campaign, which is one of the most important for the province's agricultural sector, has yielded positive results, with a production totalling 31,000 tonnes, similar to that of the previous season.

In a note, the president of the national garlic sector and of the crop's department at Asaja Córdoba, Miguel del Pino, has explained that the acreage has increased by five percent, which means that the province already has some 2,600 hectares.

Furthermore, the stability of the good prices achieved last year, not just at origin, but also in the domestic and international markets, has been confirmed. There has been an upward trend in prices, thanks especially to the fall in the production of Chinese garlic, which is considered the main competitor of garlic growers at national level. Specifically, the average price at origin has reached 1.10 Euro/kilo, and the garlic has been of good quality.

To this we must add the "better" situation of exports, with foreign markets accounting for 90 percent of the crop harvested in the province. In this sense, sales abroad have increased "significantly", especially in Brazil and Taiwan, and there are "good" prospects for garlic sales in the coming months, as "garlic in China is still expensive and Spain has little left and it is of good quality," stress sources from Asaja.
