According to data from the French Ministry of Agriculture, the country's carrot production in the 2016/2017 campaign is expected to amount to about 327.4 thousand tonnes; about 4% less than in the previous season and up to 8% below the five-year average. The acreage, however, will remain stable compared to the previous season and reach 8.2 thousand hectares, reports FAMMU/FAPA.
According to data for early January this year, French carrot exports amounted to 110.8 thousand tonnes and most of them were shipped to other EU countries (nearly 104 thousand tonnes). Most French carrots were imported by Belgium (nearly 48 thousand tonnes) and the UK (almost 20 thousand tonnes).
As for imports, the total volume reached 144.6 thousand tonnes, out of which 123 thousand tonnes also came from EU countries. The largest suppliers were Belgium, with 70.4 thousand tonnes, and Spain, with more than 22 thousand tonnes.
