Some of the carrots in NRW have become too long due to the heat this summer; now they no longer fit into the standard supermarket trays. The vegetables have simply grown longer in the ground in search of water and no longer fit in the trays for the retail trade.
"For many farmers, certain carrots are not the right length," says Carsten Abenhardt, Managing Director of the company of the same name. Between 10 and 15% of its carrots are too long for the 21cm long bowls. "At the end of the day we have a use for everything," says Abenhardt. The retail trade is a cooperative and one part of the carrots will be cut for fresh salads, and another part will be packed in bags. The quality of the produce is good; it is only the size that is problematic.
