The Central Division has set a target to plant 6000 metric tonnes of ginger for the export market and a field day was held to promote ginger and rice planting among farmers.
Principal agriculture officer Central Tepola Seniloli said the field day held in Tailevu South was a follow-up from last year's ginger and rice training for farmers.
"September is a good planting season so as to give five ample months to baby and matured ginger also harvesting to avoid wet season," he said.
Paving the ginger pathway to Australia, exporter Sai Yee Foods manager Ken Yee said the Australian market needed quality-sized ginger and encouraged farmers to produce quality ginger.
Mr Yee said since Australia only allowed Fiji ginger, the consistency of supply was very important and farmers needed to help each other to produce good quality ginger.
Meanwhile farmer Lekima Takelo said he learnt a lot at the field day and through the training provided by the Ministry of Agriculture.
Mr Takelo said the field day was an eye-opener for him as it motivated him to start planting ginger and rice.
