Since the beginning of new fishing season in East China Sea, the swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus) price begins to drop all the way after entering Shanghai seafood market. According to Shanghai Oriental International Aquatic Product Center, this year happens to be the bumper year of portunid, and the market supply in Shanghai is much more than that in previous years. Price of portunid, therefore, also drops by 20%-30%.

In the Center, around one hundred tonnes of portunid will be sold everyday. “Last year is the off-year of portunid. Wholesale price of the bigger size portunid is about more than 20 yuan/500g, while it’s more than 30 yuan/500g in retail station,” said Wang De, one staff working at the Center. The portunid sold in the center is divided into 3 classes, big, medium and small, whose prices are 120 yuan/box, 100 yuan/box and 70 yuan/box respectively. Each box is between 750g and 800g. He also added that the price was much cheaper year on year and it’s favorable to local citizens.

In Ningbo, Zhejiang province, local seafood markets can procure up to 300 tonnes of seafood to sell each day, increasing by 30%, compared with that of last week. However, the price drops by 3.6%. And after the lifting of summer fishing ban, the fine weather provides a favorable envinronment for catching operation, which will definitely help to boost the production of fish caught. It’s high likely there is another price drop trend in following few days after more shrimp and crabs go to market.

And local citizens don’t have to wait long before the hairtail, butter, little yellow croaker and other local citizens’ favorite seafood rush to market. The fresh seafood caught in South China Sea also successively enter market. Once the full lift of fishing ban initiated in September, all kinds of local seafood will be available on market in considerable quantity.
