The West Javan Bogor regency administration exported 1,000 tons of mangosteen to China on Wednesday. This shipment, equivalent to seven containers, is intended to boost mangosteen exports.
The export of the tropical fruit by mangosteen export center PT Mahkota Manggis Sehati in Bogor also aimed to support local farmers as it provided with them with information about exporting requirements and motivated them to improve their product quality and quantity, Bogor Agriculture Agency head Siti Nurianty said.
Bogor is a major mangosteen producer in West Java. In 2017, it produced 2,983 tons of mangosteen, 1,095 tons of which were exported. There are 272,211 mangosteen trees in Bogor, with the biggest ones located in seven districts, namely Leuwiliang, Leuwisadeng, Cigudeng, Nanggung, Sukajaya, Sukamakmur and Jasinga.
Due to several countries' strict exporting regulations, it was important to maintain a quality product through good agriculture practices, pest control and post-harvest treatment, all of which could help local farmers stay competitive, Siti said.
