There is a gap between early potatoes and the main harvest in the Netherlands

Core Tip: A large amount of Dutch potatoes still need to be grubbed up.
A large amount of Dutch potatoes still need to be grubbed up. The weather is delaying the harvest. "We are in a gap between the early potatoes and the main harvest," says Klaas Greydanus of the potato wholesaler of the same name. This business is located in Heerenveen, the Netherlands.

"One or the other needs to be brought in from the fields. The weather is predicted to stay dry in the coming two weeks. We are, therefore, looking forward to that."

This kind of situation sometimes causes a bit of a mood on the market. But, according to Klaas, this is not always so realistic. "More does have to be paid gradually. However, some suppliers think they must be the main price now. That is simply not possible right now."

"Sales are not really wild at the moment. There is demand from Eastern Europe. Countries in Africa are asking for a little more too. But, other than that, everything is very quiet," he says.

"We will also soon have enough potatoes. Early potato yields were already good. And if we soon have dry weather, there will certainly be sufficient supplies."

"Things have always worked out well. The potatoes look good, quality-wise. There will be a few soggy batches in between. If we can, however, dry them out well, we can work well with them. Only, there will still be some clay clinging to the potatoes at first," Klass concludes.
