In 2015, the whole shrimp farming in Guangxi province is in dismal situation. Continuous heavy rain in summer and long exposure to the sun under high temperature aggravated the shrimp disease condition. The overall success rate in Guangxi is just about 10% last year, less than 5% in some regions. For example, in Qinzhou, less than 20% ponds’ shrimp size is larger than 60/jin while 30/jin size shrimp is only available in 1-2% ponds . The flow of farmers from other provinces can reflect local farming situation to some extent. In second half of 2015, other provinces’ farmers gradually pull out of Guangxi take a wait-an-see attitude. Empty pond quantity continues to increase. The whole farming region is full of depression.

The first season of shrimp should be landed at the moment. Is there any changes to the previous depressing situation? Our journalists have latest news about that after they visit and check the shrimp ponds in Guangxi, including Fangchenggang, Qinzhou, Hepu and so on. The success rate is all more than 60% on average, and farmers can earn money. With the strong price at present, the farmers who hold hesitated attitude may pick up their confidence and back to farming. The whole situation in Guangxi starts to take its turn fro the better.

Fangchenggang

A large number of ponds that farm early-stocked shrimp in previous years have been left empty this year. After straight years of farming failure, the farmers face the problem of insufficient funds. More than 30% of other provinces’ farmers give up farming in Guangxi. Or others don’t stock the fry and are waiting for good news. Local pond rent drop from the peak price 3, 000-4, 000 yuan/mu to 1, 000 yuan/mu this year, which also reflects that many farmers from other provinces have left.

Compared with the farming situation in last year, it changes this year. First, farmers lower the farming density this year to avoid risks, which drops from 50, 000-60, 000/mu to 30, 000-40, 000/mu. With much more living space, the shrimp growth become faster. In just 60 days, the shrimp can grow into 50/jin size. Second, the weather condition for early-stocked shrimp is fine this year. Although there are more rains in late May, it relieve the high temperature pressure for the farming. In the end, many farmer said that the shrimp fry quality is better than that of last year with a high-speed growth. The case that shrimp can’t grow into big size in last year almost disappears this year.

Qinzhou

At the moment, the shrimp farming success rate is at around 50% while Dongchang, Nali and Xiniujiao region enjoy more than 60% success rate. Similar with that in Fangchenggang, the farmers from other provinces also delay the stocking time about half a month in Qinzhou. Differently, local farmers start to stock the fry at just the beginning of 2016. They begin to sell the shrimp around Dragon Boat festival, and now the stock of early-stocked shrimp becomes less and less. The farming start to transit into middle stage-stocked shrimp. The shrimp in Zhejiang province is still in the size of 100/jin, whose pond clearance is about 20%. It’s less than 20% in Guangxi province. After the Dragon Boat festival, the rains become intensive and farmers begin to sell the shrimp in large quantity, which cause a little down of the price. Recently, the price for 50/jin size is about 17.3 yuan/jin and 30/jin size about 21.5 yuan/jin.

Hepu

The success rate reaches 50% of the shrimp stocked during Chinese Spring Festival. More than half of the farmers obtain revenue. Affected by the cold air in mid-May, many ponds are cleared because of disease break. Although the farmers land the shrimp in a hurry, but there are still profits owing to good price.

There is still around 50% pond clearance in Hepu impacted by the depressing situation in last year. At present, Hepu has already entered into middle stage-stocked shrimp farming with a density about 40, 000-50, 000/mu. In June, disease break rate is near to 50% affected by the high temperature and heavy rains. White feces disease is serious now, which cause the slow growth of the shrimp. Feeding mineral supplement properly may effectively prevent shrimp disease in rainy weather.

Beihai

It’s known that almost all the farmers in Beihai are locals, which flow infrequently. The success rate can reach 60% on the basis of conservative estimation for the shrimp stocked before mid-April. Most of the shrimp has been sold because of the strong price, bringing big profits to farmers. Same as other regions, the stocking density is also lower than that in last year, which is nearly 30, 000/mu in soil ponds while it decreases about 20% in high-water level ponds.

The improve of shrimp fry quality leads to better change this year, which enjoys relatively faster growth speed. It’s estimated that a larger quantity of middle-stage farmed shrimp fry will be stocked.

Conclusion

Compared with the weather situation in Pearl River Delta and Eastern China, Guangxi enjoys more favorable weather in the first half of 2016. With little disease and high price, many regions gain good harvests. After the depression in last year, the shrimp farming in Guangxi starts to change for better. The situation of middle stage-stocked shrimp would be also better than that in last year. Although high temperature and heavy rains can’t be avoid in summer, but this year’s loss caused by disease may not as big as that in last year because the farming density drops and shrimp grows faster this year. Once the situation becomes better, the farmers from other provinces may come back to farm the shrimp again.
