According to Shantou Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau in Guangdong, China, Shantou exported a total of 34, 700 tonnes and 282, 000, 000 US dollars worth of aquatic products from January to June this year, which increases 6.92% and drops 2.19% respectively compared with that of last year. The export amount increases but its value drops.

With regard to export categories, farmed shrimp top the list of exported aquatic products, whose total export amount and value are 7, 992 tonnes and 107, 490, 000 US dollars, which decreased 17% and 19% respectively year on year. Frozen squid ranks the second of the list, which is exported a total of 9, 644 tonnes, worth 85, 110, 000 US dollars, growing 30% and 27% each. Frozen whole fish is the third large category of exported aquatic products. Its export volume is 12, 403 tonnes and value is 44, 910, 000 US dollars, 22% and 4% more respectively than that in the same period of last year. The total export amount of other categories of products, including crab meat, bullfrog leg, assorted seafood, minced fillet, and so on, is 4, 629 tonnes with value of 44, 120, 000 US dollars, slightly different year on year.

It’s known that the shrimp export of Shantou continues to drop sharply. The original export advantages gradually disappear as a result of the high price of raw shrimp and labor cost. Meanwhile, foreign countries’ technical barriers to trade and their preferential duty also hold back the export. The export destination countries decrease by 9 and increase by 3. As for the rapid export growth of the squid, the reason is that the Chinese squid and Japanese squid (Loligo japonica) produced in Shantou enjoy rich nutrition and superior freshness and deliciousness, favored very much by foreign consumers. The squid exported to EU is 1, 500 tonnes, increasing by 56% year on year. However, this year’s export growth is directly limited because of the poor catch and shortage of supply. The little 4% growth of frozen whole fish in the first half of 2016 is as a result of the export drop of golden pomfret in the second quarter, whose price is relatively higher than other fishes.

To help the export of aquatic products produced in Shantou, the Inspection and Quarantine Bureau has been putting efforts all the way to assist the export enterprises in improving self-management and self-control ability. Besides, it also helps to expand international market and improves its own supervision effectiveness and make the customs clearance more convenient. Recently, it has implemented systematic management towards aquatic products processing enterprises, carrying out supervision and random check of the products. It further lowers the inspecting frequency and shortens the inspection periods to facilitate customs clearance and save relevant costs at maximum.
